Info
Sailing is an inclusive, dynamic, and emotionally rich experience. On a boat, sight is not the only sense involved: all the other senses contribute to communicating what is happening and how to react. It is precisely for this reason that visually impaired and blind individuals can benefit from this practice. The course is open to both beginners eager to approach sailing and those who already have experience in this discipline or are experts. We use boats with movable keels, which provide a wide range of information, such as the direction and tilt of the boat, to develop greater sensitivity in handling. These boats allow easy exploration, with the possibility of capsizing to enable complete exploration. Direct contact with the boat helps to understand the functioning of each part, facilitating the acquisition of skills in maneuvering on board.
For beginners, the first lessons are held on Laser Bahia boats, with an instructor on board. The main objective is to learn the basic principles and techniques, with the prospect of continuing one's journey in the world of sailing, expanding one's skills in the future. Sailing offers a multisensory and emotional experience, providing a new approach to the sea as a place of leisure and an environment to understand and respect. Sailing also means learning to navigate safely and autonomously, engaging all senses.
For those who already have basic experience in sailing and wish to improve, lessons are held on Laser 4.7 boats. Here, different sailing angles are explored, and with the help of sound buoys, participants begin to orient themselves at sea. The course offers a comprehensive experience, allowing participants to interact with other sailors and share their passion for this sport.
The course is conducted by experienced professionals in the sports and rehabilitative field for people with visual impairments, with extensive experience in sailing.
Given the nature of the course, participants are required to have a reasonable relationship with water.
Personnel involved:
• Five sailing instructors specialized in teaching people with visual impairments; • Two assistant sailing instructors specialized in teaching people with visual impairments to support sailing activities; • Enthusiastic sailors, sighted and non-sighted, specialized in accompanying blind individuals.
